CMA Statement on the Governor’s Proposed Budget

January 10, 2025

California Medical Association (CMA) President Shannon Udovic-Constant, M.D., issued the following statement in response to Gov. Gavin Newsom's proposed 2025-26 budget:

"As we look ahead to the upcoming year and review the state’s proposed budget, we commend Governor Gavin Newsom for his steadfast leadership in safeguarding California's health care programs. In a time of unprecedented volatility and fiscal uncertainty, Governor Newsom has continued to prioritize the well-being of Californians, ensuring that critical health care services remain intact and accessible to those who need them most.

Amid ongoing challenges, including the uncertainty of the Trump administration's decisions around funding of essential programs such as Medicaid, the need for state-level leadership in health care has never been more urgent. Governor Newsom’s budget proposal reflects a clear commitment to protecting Californians' health care coverage and addressing the rising health care needs across the state.

We are particularly encouraged by his proposal to maintain funding for Medi-Cal, mental health services, and other key initiatives that provide essential services to millions of Californians.

As we move forward, it is clear California remains centered on protecting the health and well-being of all residents, ensuring that everyone has access to the care they deserve, regardless of economic or social barriers. We look forward to working alongside the Governor and our partners in the Legislature to continue advancing these vital goals."
