What You Need to Know: Medi-Cal is phasing out the legacy Transaction Services and will require all providers to log in via the Provider Portal. Practices who are not already registered for the portal should do so asap!
Effective January 20, 2025, all Medi-Cal providers must be registered for the Medi-Cal Provider Portal in order to perform electronic transactions with Medi-Cal. After that date, providers will no longer be able to login using an NPI through Transaction Services and will be required to log in through the Provider Portal.
This is part of a series of changes being implemented by the California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) to enhance electronic tools and services for Medi-Cal providers and submitters. According to DHCS, these changes are geared toward improving the user experience, promoting user self-service and enhancing security.
Providers are encouraged to register as soon as possible to prevent interruptions in day-to-day electronic transactions with Medi-Cal. To register, an authorized representative of the organization should call the Medi-Cal Telephone Service Center at (800) 541-5555 to be issued an electronic registration token.
The following information will be required:
- Provider Employer Identification Number/Social Security Number
- Unique email address
- Valid phone number
For detailed instructions about how to register in the Provider Portal, refer to the Medi-Cal Provider Portal User Guide: Provider Organization.
