Modesto diabetologist receives CMA’s 2024 Plessner Award

October 26, 2024

What You Need to Know: Modesto diabetologist who transformed the landscape of diabetes and obesity care in the Central Valley receives CMA's 2024 Frederick K.M. Plessner Memorial Award.

Modesto family physician and diabetologist Gopika Gangupantula, M.D., received the California Medical Association’s (CMA) most prestigious award, the Frederick K.M. Plessner Memorial Award. The award—announced today at the CMA House of Delegates—honors the California physician who best exemplifies the ethics and practice of a rural country practitioner.

Dr. Gangupantula—affectionately known as Dr. G—is not just a physician; she is a beacon of hope in the Modesto community. With more than 20 years of unwavering dedication, Dr. G has transformed the landscape of diabetes and obesity care in the Central Valley.

Her journey began as a community physician at a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), where she provided much needed care to underserved communities. Recognizing the growing epidemic of diabetes, and seeing her own father struggle with the disease, she pursued advanced training in diabetes and obesity management, becoming one of only about 100 diabetologists in the nation.

In 2017, she returned to Modesto and founded Valley Diabetes & Obesity, a practice that prioritizes personalized, culturally competent care. She runs the practice with her husband, Sachin, and her efforts have ensured patients receive not just treatment, but a comprehensive approach to their health.

“Her life's work is a testament to what dedication to community health can achieve,” said Sachin. “Dr G's profound dedication, relentless drive, and tenacious efforts symbolize the epitome of a health care professional committed to change, leaving an indelible mark on those she serves.”

Dr. G's collaboration with local organizations, including the establishment of specialty clinics in underserved areas, has further expanded access to care in Modesto, particularly for uninsured and Medicaid recipients.

Dr. G’s impact extends beyond her patients, training future health care providers, fostering a new generation committed to health equity.

"It is a great honor to be recognized among many rural physicians who are dedicated to serving the underserved. Practicing in rural areas comes with its unique set of challenges, but it is in these challenges that we find our purpose," Dr. Gangupantula said. "We step into our roles not just as physicians, but as advocates, educators and at times, the last ray of hope for our patients. I accept this award with deep gratitude for my patients and my community, whose trust and support have fueled my work."

CMA celebrates Dr. G not only for her exceptional contributions to medicine but also for her enduring compassion and commitment to uplifting her community.
