In early 2024, the California Medical Association (CMA) conducted a comprehensive demographic survey of all 170 CMA-accredited continuing medical education (CME) provider organizations. The survey explored general demographics, organizational priorities, challenges and best practices. Here are the key highlights:

Top organizational priorities for CME:

  • Broadening engagement and reach
  • Partnering with quality improvement and compliance
  • Professional development and educational innovation

Key challenges:

  • Attendance and participation
  • Resource constraints
  • Measuring effectiveness of activities

Leadership support and communication:
Most organizations report involved leadership support for their CME programs. Regular updates, reports and standing agenda items are common practices for keeping leadership informed.

Best practices for demonstrating CME value to leadership:

  • Demonstrating improved outcome data
  • Showcasing CME as a tool for organizational improvement
  • Increasing visibility and engagement with CME across the organization
