Reminder: CURES will require new data format for dispensers to submit prescription data on Aug. 1

July 12, 2024
Area(s) of Interest: Drug Prescribing/Dispensing

Beginning August 1, 2024, all California dispensers of controlled substances will be required to report dispensations to the Controlled Substance Utilization Review and Evaluation System (CURES) using the American Society of Automation in Pharmacy (ASAP) version 4.2B format. Physicians who dispense controlled substances should contact their data submission software provider to confirm they are prepared for this version update.

On and after this date, data submitted using version 4.1 format will no longer be accepted. According to the California Department of Justice (DOJ), this format change will improve data quality by offering more data fields and clarifying other data fields.

Bamboo Health – California’s CURES data collection vendor – has also published a data submission guide for dispensers. Detailed information about the reporting changes is available here: Description of ASAP 4.2B Changes. Answers to frequently asked questions are also available here: ASAP 4.2B FAQs.
