Congratulations to Veena Vanchinathan, M.D., this week’s winner of CMA's Trivia Tuesday challenge, successfully answering the week 2 trivia question: What was the California Medical Association's original name?
Answer: The Medical Society of the State of California
Upon its founding in 1856, CMA was known as the Medical Society of the State of California. By most accounts, the organization was masterminded by Elias S. Cooper, M.D., and Thomas Logan, M.D., who wrote letters to physician friends and colleagues, calling on them to help form the organization “to develop, in the highest possible degree, the scientific truths embodied in the profession.” The founding members met for the first time on March 12, 1856, at Pioneer Hall on J Street, in what is now Old Town Sacramento. Dues were $5 a year.
