The California Medical Association Political Action Committee (CALPAC) is now accepting nominations for its Board of Directors. Operated by physicians for physicians, CALPAC is CMA’s political organization, advocating for the welfare of physicians and patients through political advocacy, including supporting hundreds of candidates for state and federal office who share CMA's philosophy and vision of the future of health care and medical practice. The deadline to apply is May 3, 2024, at 11:59 p.m.
Members of the CALPAC Board of Directors play a critical role in educating candidates for office, encouraging physicians to participate in the political process, and raising funds to directly and indirectly support physicians and physician-friendly candidates for office. There are 30 seats available for the two-year term that begins October 25, 2024.
Board members will attend quarterly meetings, some of which are held virtually. In-person meetings are typically held twice a year in connection with major CMA events. Board members are expected to be politically active, including fundraising for CALPAC at CMA events and among their colleagues back home, hosting or coordinating fundraisers for candidates for state office, and attending candidate interviews in open seat races for the state Legislature and Congress. There are 30 available seats on the CALPAC Board of Directors, as outlined below:
- 11 physicians representing CMA Districts I-XI
- 12 physicians chosen on an at-large basis
- 1 young physician (age 40 and under or in the first eight years of practice)
- 1 resident or fellow
- 1 medical student
- 1 member of the CMA Organized Medical Staff Section
- 1 member of the CMA Ethnic Medical Organization Section
- 2 executive employees of CMA component medical societies
All members of CMA in good standing are invited to apply. All candidates will be considered for all seats for which they are eligible based on the criteria above.
The Committee on Nominations will develop a recommended slate for the CALPAC Board, including seat assignments, to be approved by the CMA Board of Trustees.
