CMA president issues statement on medication abortion case heard by the U.S. Supreme Court

March 27, 2024
Area(s) of Interest: Reproductive Freedom

California Medical Association (CMA) President Tanya W. Spirtos, M.D., issued the following statement on the abortion pill case currently being considered by the U.S. Supreme Court:

“As physicians, we at the California Medical Association believe that patients must have access to vital, often life-saving reproductive health care. We stand committed to protecting the fundamental human right to access reproductive health care services and safeguarding personal medical decisions that should be made by patients in consultation with their physicians.

Over five million people in this country have used mifepristone since its FDA approval in 2000. Not only does it have a clear record of safe use, but few drugs have undergone such thorough post-approval studies. The US Supreme Court should not interfere in the FDA’s approval process or create barriers to accessing health care."
