About Our Speaker
The President pro Tempore of the California State Senate is the presiding officer of the Senate. They are elected by their fellow senators and serve as the Senate's leader in the absence of the Lieutenant Governor.
Senator McGuire was first elected to the Senate in 2014 to represent the 2nd Senate District, which includes Del Norte, Trinity, Humboldt, Lake, Mendocino, Sonoma and Marin counties. Before running for the California Senate, he served on his local school board, city council and board of supervisors.
He has consistently advocated for our children and public schools. He took a prominent role in addressing legislative concerns about wildfires and emerged as a key figure in holding PG&E responsible. Moreover, he has demonstrated remarkable success in securing resources to address homelessness and facilitate the construction of affordable housing in rural California.
As a third-generation prune and grape farmer in Sonoma County's Alexander Valley, Senator McGuire has deep roots in California. He still resides in Sonoma County with his wife, Erika, and son, Connor.
