Sacramento ob-gyn Laurie Gregg, M.D., received the 2023 California Medical Association (CMA) Gary S. Nye Award for Physician Health and Well-Being. The award is presented each year to a physician who has made significant contributions toward improving physician health and wellness.
As the chief wellness officer at Sutter Independent Physicians, Dr. Gregg instituted an organizational focus on well-being that includes individual monitoring of burnout; quarterly education on ways to change the medical system to prevent burnout; and programs that build community and collegiality among physicians.
Dr. Gregg is also a founding member of the Sierra Sacramento Valley Medical Society (SSVMS) Joy of Medicine Program Advisory Committee. Since it’s founding in 2017, the program has provided no-cost, anonymous counseling to more than 350 physicians, facilitated more than 150 physician peer group sessions and hosted seven physician well-being summits.
Dr. Gregg was instrumental in launching a national peer support network of ob-gyns across the country and has presented wellness and well-being research at the national and international levels.
“Physicians train for a long time, they put a lot of blood and sweat and tears to it,” said Dr. Gregg. “So it's critical to really support the physicians because they deserve it. But also our workforce is shrinking, and so to retain and recruit, it's really important to do this work.”
This award was established in honor of Gary Nye, M.D., a leader in bringing attention and developing solutions for physician impairment and rehabilitation.
