To help you learn how to become an effective advocate for health equity both in and out of health care settings, East Palo Alto Mayor Lisa Gauthier will be a featured speaker at Physicians for a Healthy California’s Health Equity Leadership Summit, held September 14-15 in San Jose.
In addition to serving as the current mayor and a city councilmember since 2012 for East Palo Alto, Gauthier is the Senior Vice President of Inclusion and Belonging for the Silicon Valley Leadership Group, where she leads the workforce/education, racial justice and equity and health care policy areas. She is also a Regional Area Director for Black Women Organized for Political Action (BWOPA).
Gauthier will join a panel of policy and community leaders for a session titled Developing and Advocating for Equitable Health Policy. Panelists will discuss how to approach advocating for health equity both in and out of health care settings – whether through directly assisting patients, making a difference in your local community, or engaging with elected officials. Other participants in the panel include:
- Jerry Abraham, M.D., MPH (Facilitator), President, Los Angeles County Medical Association
- Rakhi Singh, M.D., Medical Director, Fair Oaks Health Center Adult Clinic
- Mariel Marquez, M.D., Pediatric Resident, Valley Children’s Hospital

There’s still time to register for PHC’s Health Equity Leadership Summit, which will provide an opportunity for physicians, executives, advocates and allies to find community, engage in hands-on trainings and workshops, and hold in-depth conversations about how they are addressing the issue of health equity in California through their care of underserved communities throughout the state.
