November 2022 ballot measure would virtually eliminate MICRA protections

August 26, 2021

MICRA—California’s Medical Injury Compensation Reform Act—is under threat by a ballot initiative that would create a new category of “catastrophic damages,” with awards not subject to any cap on noneconomic damages – virtually eliminating MICRA’s protections. The initiative will be voted on in November 2022.

The California Medical Association (CMA) is mobilizing to defeat this measure and medical staffs across the state are joining the effort by donating funds to the CMA Political Education Fund (PEF), which pays for all the physician education, training and mobilization work that will be necessary to protect MICRA. Our work would not be possible without help from our leadership physicians who are informing their colleagues, making presentations at medical staffs and soliciting funds.

If your medical staff has not yet donated to PEF, or your medical staff wishes to increase their support, please contact Micah Scheindlin at MScheindlin@cmadocs.org for information.

We thank the medical staffs from the following hospitals who have pledged their financial support of PEF:
