Can physicians on the hospital medical staff continue to exercise their hospital privileges if their privileges expire during the emergency?

posted on

CMS is waiving 42 CFR §482.22(a)(1)-(4) regarding details of the credentialing and privileging process. The waiver of these requirements will allow for physicians whose privileges will expire to continue practicing at the hospital and for new physicians to be able to practice before full medical staff/governing body review and approval to address workforce concerns related to COVID-19.

This CMS blanket waiver is in effect, with a retroactive effective date of March 1, 2020 through the end of the federal emergency declaration.
